Any ideas on where I could get the plug that goes from the harness to the back of the ignition switch? I have only been able to find it as part of the complete harness.
Unless you can talk one of the wiring harness manufactuer's to sell you one seperately, I think that your only source is going to be a salvage piece. This piece was never available from GM as a seperate part and, as far as I know, is not sold in reproduction as a seperate part.
M&H Electrical Fabricators of Santa Fe Springs, CA will likely be the best source if they'll sell you one. The problem is that while they are located in California, I think that their manufacturing facilities are in Mexico. That's where the components of their harnesses "reside". I doubt that they'll be willing to send to Mexico an order for such a part. But, you'll never know until you ask them.
I've always found M&H VERY responsive to providing harness component pieces and they shipped PDQ from their California headquarters. But, Joe's hint at visiting your local scrap yard could be the fastest/cheapest way to get the connector you need...just have to know what you're looking for to visually confirm you've got the correct item!
Ian - Oct 1966 Chevrolet Parts and Accssories Catalog shows both the '66 Corvette and '66 Chevrolet Passenger car used the same ignition switch, P/N 1116673, so I expect that the same ignition switch harness plug would have been used on both these harnesses. Pete
I have had no luck trying to buy just the plug from a manufacturer. One very kind NCRS member offered his from a used harness but it turned out the prong ends were broken off. Any chance that someone might have a used harness with an intact connector they would be willing to part with?
Ian - I have my orignal 65 bubba-ed harness in a box for just such "harvesting". Assuming the wise folks here confirm utility for your 66 application, it (the harness side of the plug and a few inches of the wires) is yours.
now, I suppose I could put the entire harness up on ebay as a "rare original 1965 CORVETTE dash harness with authentic period mods" and get craaazy $$ for it, but that ain't my style . . .
Jack/Ian - I looked at the back Bakelite piece and connectors on the backs of both ignition switches, the '65 1116660 w/ 660 embossed on switch body, and the '66 1116673 w/ 673 embossed on the switch body and everything is labelled and configured identically and the arrangement of the slots on the switch body for the plastic latches from the plug are in the same locations so it should be good to go. Good luck. Pete
