Re: cleaning up 64 front bumper brackets

    Darrell,

I'd remove the bumpers and clean the bumper supports with some Navel Jelly rust remover being careful not to get any on the chrome surfaces. Same with the bolts and washers if you do not have access to a bead blast machine. After you have thoroughly rinsed the navel jelly from the bumpers brackets and bolts let them dry and then carefully mask off the bumper support and give the bumper brackets a few coats of Krylon dull alluminum spray paint or what ever contrasting silver color that you think would closely match the bumper back side plating color. The bolts if they are original should have a "TR", "M", "WB" or "RWB" markings on the heads. They are to be cadmium plate. I'd find a like size replacement bolt and washer to install in the bumper support bracket while having the originals replated or purchase new ones from CC, Paragon, ZIP, LIC, etc.

        Darrell,

I forgot to mention, be sure to have someone helping you when you remove and reistalling the bumpers. A second person always makes realigning the bumpers easier when putting them back on. Not to mention it helps keep from scratching the body paint.

A good idea is to use two layers of masking tape on each the bumper amd contact areas on the body for protection.
