    C3 jute carpet padding

I have a semi restored 72 coupe. This week I pulled the seats (recovered) and the console/dash out of the car in order to install long sought after seat belts and to correct a few items. This allowed me to have a look underneath the fairly new (poorly installed) reproduction carpeting. It was obvious to me from my inspection, and from the AIM that the car orignally had several jute pads glued along the top of the transmission tunnel and behined the dash underneath the wipper arm storage tray. There are no longer any pads in these areas. The replacement carpet has jute pads attached in the footwell areas (as does, it seems most of the repo carpet kits being sold), but an online search for the transmission tunnel pads and the pads behined the dash turned up nil. Ecklers shows an "insulation pad" kit, but that kit seems to be a near duplicate of the jute pads that are already attached to the repo carpeting less the transmission tunnel pads. Can someone please shed some light on the configuration of the original jute pads vs. those that seem to be prevelant in the aftermarket, and please let me know if a decent OEM copy kit is available? Thanks!

Mike, if the jute pads you are missing are normally under the carpet, like those on the forward transmission tunnel, I would expect quality replacement carpet sets to have those pads included.

I don't know what information you have that says all replacement carpet sets don't not have them, but I would feel free to contact the supplier of the next carpet set and confirm which pads were included. If the existing carpet is in good condition, and you feel inclined to improve the installation, the jute pad sets are available separately...you could confirm that the pad set includes the forward tunnel insulation.

As far as the insulation pads located high up on the firewall just behind the dash, I don't think you can blame the carpet guys for not providing those...they don't promise you a car set of insulation pads, just those under the carpet.

Does your car have the firewall insulation? This is a blanket of jute type material with a heavy rubber covering that is fastened to the firewall with rubber fasteners. This insulation is also not provided in carpet sets, but can be obtained from Dr. Rebuild. They also supply an upper firewall insulation kit which consists of the insulation pads you're missing behind the dash. See the link below.

Thanks for the info on the underdash pieces Chuck. I was not blaming the carpet manufacturers for my missing pieces. I was blaming the guy from whom I bought my car because he had ripped out all of this stuff. The transmission tunnel pads that I seem to be missing according to the AIM pictures are larger pieces that go over the top of the the tunnel below the instrument console, below the heater control/ashtray console, and behined the parking brake assembly. These would not necessarily be pieces that are included in a carpet set becasue there is no carpet over them. I saw a picture of Eckler's insulation kit, and it did not seem to include these center pieces as shown in the AIM. This made me wonder as to what exactly is correct original jute pad configuration.

Mike, you are correct. Those insulation pads would actually be under/behind the front console.

Your best bet on something like these pads will be the same source I mentioned before...Dr. Rebuild. Dr. Rebuild reproduces a lot of small parts that are unavailable from the ultra-large vendors. Do a search of their catalog and see if you don't find them; they're probably there somewhere, but finding them online with the alphabetical index may be a trick.

Tom, there was a thread recently on carpet that best meets judging criteria. The discussion centered around Romeo Engineering (has the IMCO logo, but color may be off) and ACC (color is correct, but no IMCO logo). You have to make the choice...after that, you can shop for price. Willcox was mentioned as having a good price on ACC.
