I am installing OEM lap belts (with incorrect 1972 date codes) in my early (Sept 15, 1971) 1972. Ever since I bought the car (without lap belts) I have been staring at the illuminated red seat belt warning light on the dash, and so I bought retracters with the wiring connections. When I removed the carpet in preparation for installation I could find none of the wiring shown in the AIM or in the 1972 chassis service manual. After further inspection of the service manual I found a few short paragraphs showing a thermal switch unit for the warning circuit used on early 72's. I found this thermal unit on my car. I could not find any reference to this particular setup in the AIM, and I can not find any 1972 wiring diagram that shows this early circuit. I am assuming that the circuit is operated purely on the timing of the thermal switch (15 secs. according to eht CSM), and that it does not sense weight in the seat as does the later circuits. (There is no wiring in my seats.) The thermal unit in my car is bad (tested with an ohm meter), thus the constant dash warning light. My questions are: 1) Does anyone have a circuit diagram for this early configuration? 2) Where can I find a replacement thermal switch? 3) Is there supposed to be a buzzer associated with this early circuit, and if so, where can I get a replacement? Thanks!!

Re: C3 seat belt warning circuits
The JM incorrectly states that there was buzzer on all 1972s. Early 1972 cars have only a timed relay for the seat belt warning light. It goes out after a time whether the belt is buckled or not. The buzzer was added about the first of 1972 calendar year. I can't find my notes, but I think we have found a December car that had the buzzer. I can't help you in finding the part, but at least you don't need the buzzer. (My car was built Sept. 24, 1971)- Top

About your belts
Mike, Did you recently purchas your belts? Did you buy new or get some used belts. The reason I am asking is that when I purchased my belts six years ago, they did not have the proper date code tags for them, unless they were used. Are your date tags new? I have a 71 coupe so I need tags for lap and shoulder belts.

Re: C3 seat belt warning circuits ???
I have 2 1972s - an early (Sept 71) and a late (Apr 72). I have not done any restoration on the early one but my seat belt light never does come on. If you have that thermal unit available - ARE THERE ANY IDENTIFING MARKS OR PART NUMBERS ON IT ???
As youv'e discovered, this part is not documented anywhere ...
Thanks- Top

Re: About your belts
Chasman
I recently bought my belts from a gentleman that refurbishes orignal belts. I already have shoulder belts with the correct date codes, but I needed lap belts. I also have the female portion of the original lap belts. After 18 months of searching, I was so desperate to have some original belts that the date code ceased to become important to me. The belts that I purchased have the wrong date labels, but the guy that I bought them from told me about his trick for getting the correct labels. It seems that the plastic covered female portion of the belt also has the date code lables, so he siggested that I dissasemble the female portion, remove the original lables, and apply them to the refurbished lap belts. I have not yet verified this information, but it sounds like a good idea.- Top

Re: C3 seat belt warning circuits ???
Mike,
There is a single drawing of this part in the 1972 chassis service manual. I do not have access to it right now so I can't give you the page number, but it is in the electrical section. The thermal unit looks on the outside like a small cylindrical metal electrical "black box" component. It has a black plastic base with two connector prongs, and a silver metal body/cover. It has markings on it indicating that Sanyo is the manufacter. It also has some numbers which I can get for you when I get home. It is located up underneath the passenger side dash behined the left side of the map pocket, way up on the dashpad mounting bracket. It has two connecting wires on a plug, one of which goes to the warning light, and the other that goes into the wiring harness. Hope this helps.- Top

Re: C3 seat belt warning circuits- additional info
Mike McHugh,
I'm home now and I have more info. The page number in the CSM that shows the thermal unit is 12-58. Also, the unit itself was made by Sylvania, not Sanyo as I had incorrectly stated earlier. The number on the thermal unit is 03961500. I wonder if I can just go down to Napa and ask for a replacement part. Sometimes I am surprised when this method is successful.

Thanks for the info. I have seen the service manual drawing but have never - till ow - been able to get info on the thermal timer.
Thanks Again- Top

Re: C3 seat belt warning circuits- additional info
Probably the reason you do not find the thermal switch is that most of the time what was reproduced for AIM's was the final version that was used at the end of model year. Has all the revisions, but none of the prior sheetsDick Whittington- Top
