    '81 Steering Wheel

I just purchased an '81 Vette that has a TERRIBLE "fuzzy" steering wheel cover on it due to the original having been severely deteriorated. What can I do in an attempt to keep the original steering wheel (and to get rid of the horrid 'rug')? Can an experienced "interior" shop restore a leather steering wheel or should I just plan on buying a new one?

    THanks!

I wouldn't expect to find many local upholstery shops that could recover your wheel, but there are at least a few firms that specialize in restoration of these wheels to like-new condition. Check out an edition of Chevy/Corvette Buyers Guide or call one of the major interior vendors like Al Knoch, Ecklers, or Auto Accessories of America.

There is a guy in Michigan who restores these leather-covered steering wheels. I think his name is Chuck Pelton, but I don't have an address or phone number for him at this site. Can anyone help?

I too have an '81 that needed attention to the wheel(dark blue). I found a restoration service in Sacramento that stripped the original finish, lightly "sanded" the leather smooth, and re-dyed to the original color for $55.00! The wheel looked great!!. If your interested e-mail me and I'll look up his phone # and address.. Rich Bethel
