How can I tell if a clutch Z bar is for a big block or small block? What is the difference in them?

There were at least 3 different clutch cross shafts used over the 1963-67 period. They are VERY difficult to distinguish one from another. The only difference is a very slight difference in the angular relationship between the 2 levers attached to the shaft. Otherwise, they are all identical.
The only way that I know of to identify one from another is to compare the one you have to examples of known originals of a given part number. Unfortunately, these shafts never had a part number embossed or otherwise stamped upon them. The only way that you could identify, for sure, the part number of any given shaft is if you had a SERVICE piece with the part tag still on it.
So, if in your parts collection you happen to have at least one NOS example with parts tag of each of the several configurations, then you can compare any unknown shaft to each of the ones you have and determine which one it is. Outside of that, I can't tell you how to ID them.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top
