I have just received an e-mail from ncrs@inquest.net. Attached are two files; one is a .jpeg and the other is a .zip. I refuse to open those attachments. Is this a legitimate NCRS mailing?

Re: NCRS Virus?
Paul - probably a spoofed email, these worms lately are getting terrible. I am even getting emails at IBM in my lotus notes now, never had them there before. I would delete the email. Norton should actually be removing infected files from your emails, mine does, but the emails still come in, without the attachments. Make sure you have a good Virus tool like Norton or McCaffe, and keep it updatated, which means about twice a week patches these days...Craig- Top

There actually is a NCRS Virus
It makes people spend more than 500 bucks on a NOS radiator cap.

Re: NCRS Virus?
Paul, I suspect our little computer demon friends begin to figure out how to defeat fire walls and anti-virus software an hour after the programs are released.
I recommend an intermediary program like MailWasher...supposedly it checks your email on the server, allowing you to see the subject, the sender, and the body of the email without ever receiving the mail on your PC. If it never gets to your computer, then it can't give you a virus, can it?
Then you can decide what to do with it..."select all email for bouncing" ususally works for me, but I have overlooked a rare genuine "admin@ncrs.org" message in a deluge of organ enhancing devices/drugs, viagra, "new super viagra, gushing girls, Paris Hilton footage, obvious foreign solicitions ("Yo Wanh' Guls"), etc., etc., etc.
You don't have to worry about NCRS sending you anything, unless it's something related to your posts on this board. Shoot, some people complain they never receive their Drivelines, but I know they send them because I get mine...sometimes sooner, sometimes later.- Top

Re: NCRS Virus?
I simply deleted that message. I am generally well protected by Norton but when I saw that .zip attachment it was game over. Did not open and off it went! NCRS has not been a problem for me in the past so I figured something was wrong.- Top

Re: NCRS Virus?
I have gotten an e-mail from Microsoft everyday for the past 4 1/2 weeks advising me to download an update. Another scam. I do the updates automatically. Did not open it Just got one from billingmgr@aol.usa wanting to update my credit card. AOL advised it is another scam. You have to be verrry careful as to what you open from seemingly legit sites.Dick Whittington- Top

Re: NCRS Virus?
Paul,
It is kind of sad yet a little funny. I have had cable modem for about a year now. Before that my e-mail address was ncrs@iquest.net. They can't even spoof the old address correctly.
I feel pretty confident that no virus e-mails are being generated from my account, or ncrs.org. Because of my involvement here my address is in a lot of address books around the internet, so it does get spoofed from time to time. I use Trend Micro Internet Security (formally Pc-Cillin) and it updates often times two or three times a DAY. With the proliferation of virus's out there I just don't feel comfortable updating once or twice a week.
Another side affect of this is that both my home and ncrs addresses are on some blacklists because of spoofed spam. This means that I can't even send e-mail to all of the users of this board. SORBES is a common email filter that a lot of ISP's use. It will put your address on it's blacklist and then make you pay to get it off. Pretty good scam in itself if you ask me.

A discussion board user has Klez worm...
Check the properties of the suspect message and you can often see what it contains and where it actually came from, even though the "from" address is spoofed. RoadRunner is stripping the outgoing messages of the guy I am refering to, so it may not be the same guy causing you trouble. -Karl- Top

Re: NCRS Virus?
If you have Norton, set it on "Automatic Live Update" and forget about it - it updates automatically in the background so you don't have to "remember" to do the manual on-line update yourself. "Set and Forget"- Top
