    1970 Tachometer

THe tach is not working and I was told that it is usually the distributor side gear. What is the easiest way to check and determine the root cause? Thanks

Pull the distributor, disassemble and inspect.

      Don,

I would first disconnect the cable at the tach and see if the cable inside the cable housing turns. If it does either the cable is broke and needs to be replaced or the distributor tach drive gear is damaged. If it doesn't turn then it is probably in the tach head.

Don, try this before pulling the distributor.....remove the tach cable from the distributor housing. Inspect the end of the metal/wire cable inside the cable sheath. The end should be squared off, with distinct edges. If the end is rounded/worn off, you will need to replace the cable. This was the problem with my '72's tach. Saved me from pulling and tearing down the distributor to reach the side tach-drive gear.
