Hi, assembling a 427/390 69 drive train. Problem- when bolting the bellhousing to the engine the clutch fork and throw out bearing have no play or slide on the tranny input shaft. 11" clutch and a Hays disc and pressure plate, new trans ball stud and good clutch fork....I must be missing something. Any ideas appreciated.....

One thought - you mention a new ball stud. Do you still have the old one? No expert here, but I believe there were a few different ball stud lengths used in those days and you might have a part that may not have the same dimesions as the original piece. Just a thought.

Re: 69 427/390 clutch fork end play
There are several places to check.
Is the throwout bearing the same length as stock? - there were two lengths commonly used in the aftermarket.
Is the bellhousing stock? - aftermarket bellhousings are usually deeper than stock.
Is the pressure plate a diaphragm type spring or a three finger type? - the three finger performance type has a different lever ratio.
Pivot bolt already mentioned.
Is the release fork engaged in the correct groove on the throughout bearing?
I'll bet it's either the longer bearing or the fork isn't properly seated.
Good luck!- Top

I think we may have identified the problem. The diaphram clutch, I am told by Hays, is 1/4" taller than the Borg/Beck 3 finger. It's coming today red fgt so I will know soon. The throw out bearing is the short style, and the bellhousing in an original 621. Thanks for the input. If all else fails, there is an adjustable pivot ball.- Top
