How to determine exterior paint type?

I have a 69 coupe and have no history on the car. The paint is looking faded and I would like to polish it up. I know it is not the original paint because it is a different color than stamped on the plate. I have looked at car polishes (like Zaino) and some of them are listed for bc/cc and others are for regular paint. I don't know what paint I have. Is there a easy way to determine the paint type?

    Thanks, Mike

Try some CONVENTIONAL wax or scratch remover (must have an abrasive content) and see if you can 'pull color' onto a clean cloth. If you can 'lift' color, then there's no clear coat over the base paint and it's lacquer. Other paints (like water based enamel) will also resist lifting....
