what is the neutral ideal supposed to be.
on a 245 hp car
when i put it in drive it slams into gear is that the way these old trans' engaged gear from neutral?

No, it should not slam into gear

You may have your idol to high or the band adjustment wrong.

Roy, my car has slammed into gear since I bought it in 1989; just thought that was "normal." I have the idle set low (@ the rpm that the operators manual books calls for). Are the bands too tight or too loose when this occurs? Is this a simple fix for a transmission shop or a major tear down?

Trans shop simple, the band adjustment is on the out side R/S. sound to me it may be to loose. Read and look in an old book. If you can put gas in your Corvette , then you can adjust the band. Or if the vacuum line going to the modulator is leaking or the modulator is bad this will also cause it,the part is cheep and again you CAN DO IT.
