    C2 POWER STEERING FLUID

The power steering pump for my 1967 CORVETTE was rebuilt and the rebuilder recommends "Castrol power steering fluid only". I thought that ATF DEXRON fluid was acceptable. Why shouldn't I use ATF in my power steering unit?

I think the rebuilder holds stock in Castrol, James....

      Jimmy,
Before using Dexron fluid, you may want to check your owner's manual or shop manual for the '67.

The '63 Shop Manual (and my '65 owner's manual) states that the power steering unit should be filled with Automatic transmission fluid "Type A" bearing an "AQ-ATF" mark. It is the same as that used in the Powerglide Transmission.

In the old days, we called this fluid Type A, Suffix A. I believe that it was the forerunner to Dexron. Perhaps other will continue to provide information.

      Good luck and best regards,
      Gene
