    C2 '67 Small Block Judging Questions. (2)

First question, the 8 brackets that hold the spark plug shields in place. Are there any stampings on these, ie: Made in USA? I have some that are not stamped, some with Made in USA, and some that are stamped, Made in Canada. I know the Made in Canada are over the GM counter replacements. But which is correct for flight judging, no stampings or made in USA? I have checked both the Second and Third edition Judging Manual and I couldn't find any mention of this.

Second question, I've had one sharp judge or one mis informed judge comment on my dipstick tube. It has a slight taper in the diameter of the tube about 2 to 3 inches from the top of the tube. I know that I've had some sharp judges in the past go over this car and there was only one that commented on this taper not being original. I have a replacement tube that isn't tapered and have the exhaust manifold off now for other work. I am wondering if I should replace this tapered tube to the non tapered tube.

    Thanks for the help.

Zachary - The original spark plug shield brackets on a '67 sb had only FMP stamped on them in 1/8" letters. My experience is that you could not always see the stamped letters because of the location of where the letters were stamped coupled with the bracket orientation and the installation of the shielding or the fact that the letters were stamped on the "back" side. Zachary------

The swaged top (tapered) dipstick tube is the correct tube for your application. That tube was GM #3876784.

In July, 1974 the GM #3876784 tube was discontinued. It was replaced, for SERVICE, by the GM #3865664. The GM #3865664 was originally used in PRODUCTION for 1965 and 1966 Chevrolet and GMC series 10 trucks with small block engines. It was never originally used on a Corvette, though. It is almost the same as the 3876784 except for the fact that it didn't have a swaged upper end. So, GM decided that it would make a good SERVICE replacement for the 3876784 since the 3876784 was last used for PRODUCTION in the 1974 model year.

The GM #3865664 is still available to this very day and is the tube with the "straight" upper end.

        Add-on

In addition to what Joe says, reproduction sources do offer various versions of the factory original oil gauge upper guide tube. The Paragon catalog does a nice job of picturing them....
