    '64 Alternator Question

Please excuse the lengthy post, but I am attempting to confirm that the alt. on my '64 327/300 is original to the car using TIM&JG, 3rd Edt. pg. 116.

All items in first para re: part no. amps, date, etc check out ok.

Negative diodes have black ink markings but very faint. Positive diodes have red ink markings visible and I can confirm on one the proper codes. I have not attempted to clean the diodes for fear of removing the ink.

The orientation of front case to rear case checks out ok, e.g., rear rotated 90 degrees clockwise.

The 6 rectangular holes around the periphery of the rear case check out. Problem occurs with the off-white push-in plug attaching the harness to rear case. TIM&JG says plug should be at 9 o'clock position whereas mine is nearer 12 o'clock position. If the rear case were not rotated 90 degrees clockwise as required, the plug would be at 9 o'clock postion.

Also, on the rear case adjacent to the boss for the bushing cap, is what appears to be the butt end of a condensor or capacitor (or a stamped steel plug?) with the following marking. Center is stamped "D-R". Around top perimeter is stamped "1959455" and around bottom perimeter is stamped "5MF". TIM&JG makes no mention of this feature on the '64 alt.

I prefer to NOT go the restoration route if it is original to the car.

Any comments on the orientation of the harness plug (TIM&JG says 9:00, actually 12:00) and what appears to be a feature on the rear case not covered in the TIM&JG will be appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Charlie Cadenhead

    Re: '64 Alternator Question

    Charlie,

If all the numbers including the date are correct we will have to assume that alternator is correct for your Corvette. As for the capacitor, every alternator has that capacitor so don't worry about that.

The hole for the alternator is at the 11 o'clock position when the alternator is turned correctly for a 64. You might stretch it and say 12 o'clock if you wish.

Judging manual needs to be revised to reflect the actual configuration of the 64 alternator.

    Regards,

    JR

'64 Alternator Question - Thanks JR

Thanks JR, that is what I suspected and was hoping to have confirmed. Think I'll keep the alternator as is rather than having it restored to a "new look" condition.
