Have a friend man the battery cable. Just set it on, or clamp it with a battery jumper cable, while you check under the dash. Sniff for smoke and feel the wires for heat.

If you have a spare amp gauge around, connect the + to the battery and the - to the positve battery cable.

    ___________ plus battery cable
    - |
    (A) Amp gauge
    + | _____ neg cable (ground)
    __[+]______[-]__
    | battery |
    | |
    -----------------

If all is well, you will have only a couple of amps. As things get turned on, radio, blower fan, headlightes, etc., the current will increase to the negative side. If you get more than 30 amps, something is wrong.

DO NOT ATTEMPT to start the car this way.

      Mike,
Thanks for the suggestion. I'll try using the amp gauge. I have a spare in line fuse, if I put that between the battery POS+ and the POS+ wire will that act as a safety in line fuse. I do most of my work by myself. I don't like to rely on the wife or kids for this stuff.

I just finished installing all new harnesses and the rebuilt dash cluster in my 66. I'm planning to test also but will use a jumper cable containing a 30 amp fuse in series with the + cable. If you have a short, the fuse will blow before you smell melting wire.
