I just bought a new battery gauge and its not working. Is their a bench test tht will determine if the gauge is working? Thanks again for the help.

Re: CE Ammeter Gauge
This has been covered by several threads in the archieves. You don't give the year of you, so I'll go out on a limb and presume we're talking about an ammeter vs. late model Corvettes with their voltmeters. You get a gross operability feel for ammeter integrity by momentarily connecting a 1.5V AA battery across its terminals.
Just 'touch' the final connection and see if the meter moves either way (up or down scale). Do NOT connect the battery for long time periods as you risk 'pegging' the meter and perhaps damaging it. If you can get the meter needle to 'twitch' off the small battery's energy, it's basically functional and time to look for electrical wiring problems in the car....- Top

Re: CE Ammeter Gauge
Don I read your Sunday post about your guage problem. Many years ago I had a similiar problem on my 70, so will tell you what you might try.
Plugged into your alternator is a gray plug with two wires.
Remove this plug and remove the black wire that has two white stripes from the plug. This wire terminal will have a tang that you will need to depress to slide it out.
Make up a new wire to connect to the terminal on the alternator and reconnect the plug to the alternator. This is going to be your test wire.
Connect other end of the test wire with a terminal to the relay on the fender. I used one of the top connection terminals.
What this does is bypass the original wire from the alternator that goes into the harness that has a fusable link and connects to the relay.
If the guage now works with this bypass, you can do one of two things. Buy a fusable link and install it in the wire you made up and just use the test wire you made. The other option is to replace the original fusable link and remove the test wire. You should find this fusable link just below the relay in the area just below the front of the master cylinder. That is where mine is.
Hope this works for you. If it does I will tell you a road story about how far you can drive on a charged battery without a functioning alternator. Point system ignition systems don't require a lot to run for hours.- Top

Re: CE Ammeter Gauge
Not any experience with the electrical features of a 64, did not own mine long enough (68-69). Do you have the service manuals for the 1963 with the 1964 supplement?
With your 64 having a voltage regulator I don't know how the wiring is without taking a look at the manuals later. It could be very similiar to my 68 with a voltage regulator. You should not damage anything trying.- Top
