    C2 Transmision Leaks

I have removed the transmission from my 65 roadster to fix some fluid leaks. The transmission seems to be in great shape, little to no wear on the synchro rings etc, I think it has about 80k miles on it. The rear seal is no problem and the front bearing cover gasket is easy too. My question is; it seems like there may be leaking around the counter gear shaft at the front of the case. Is this possible and can anyone help me with a solution.

    Thank you in advance,

    George #36908

    George-----

It's VERY possible. The countergear shaft at the front of the case is a very common source of leakage on Muncie transmissions. Some folks think that it's caused by repeated rebuilds which result in wear of the boring in the main case. I don't think so, though. This factor MAY CONTRIBUTE to wear, but I think that most of the problem is caused by distortion of the hole due to the stresses that are place upon it from use. This causes the hole to slightly "egg-shape" and a leak is born.

The only long-term cure for it is to remove the transmission, strip it down to the bare case, and have the case bushed by an expert like Larry Fischer of D&L Tranmissions or Ed Hartnett of Hartnett's 4-Speeds in Lansdowne, PA.

        Joe,
That doesn't sound like good news. I see in most of the cataloges the transmission rebuild kits include a new counter gear shaft. I am willing to bet the aluminum case wears far more than the steel shaft. Any thoughts on why this would be included? I was just going to change all the seals and gaskets. I think I will refill the case and now that everything is cleaned up maybe I can see if it is leaking at the shaft or that was just a result of the bearing cover gasket which was leaking for sure.

        Thank you,

        George

The shafts are routinely supplied as part of rebuild kits. Mostly, it's because the countergear roller bearings ride against the shaft and wear can occur. So, both the bearings and the shaft are usually replaced. Plus, the shaft is a relatively low cost item and, usually, all of the low cost items are replaced in a trans rebuild. Replacing the shaft will have no effect on the leakage problem, though. I'll bet that not a single leak in this area is due to a worn shaft end.

            Joe,
I am sure you are right. Guess I will tear it apart and measure the hole for being egg shaped and see how much clearance between it an the shaft diameter.

              Tom,

Sounds like great timing but that is a bit of a trip from NC.

              Thank you,

              George

As an alternative to the trip...

I had this exact problem with a Warner T-10. Posted the problem on this board and the cure suggestions were similar. I pulled the trans and it would leak out the shaft hole on the bench. My transmission guy suggested a possible fix. Don't take anything apart. First, make sure the shaft is all the way "in", then clean, clean, clean with brake cleaner. Then upon reinstalling the transmission, use "Plumber's Goop" at shaft area. I would describe this as a H.D. clear silicone. May sound like a haywire fix, but in my case, not a drop of oil to be seen yet. To me, for about $3, it certainly seems like it is worth a try... Best, Dennis
