C2 ('65) tire size

Hi folks,

What's the authoritative word on the correct replacement tire size for a '65? The original tire was a 7.75x15, right? I've currently got 205/75-15s on my car and they look a little tall to me.

From your copy of the 1965 NCRS Technical Information Manual & Judging Guide:

"Service replacement tires are of bias or radial construction. The size designation is 195/75/R15 or 205/75/R15 for radial and F/78-15 for bias construction. These tires must have the correct whitewall and/or goldstripe/goldline width and be made by an OEM manufacturer."

Revs per mile:

7.75-15 - 775
215/70R-15 - 775
205/75R-15 - 766

The 205/75 is a reasonable match in terms of dimensions and revs per mile, but they are low performance, low speed rated tires without nylon cap belts, so I don't recommend this size.

215/70R-15s are available in speed ratings up to "Z" and most are more performance oriented than the 205/75. Though a 5.5" wide wheel is the minimum recommended for a 215/70 it's best to increase wheel width 6.0".

Don't know your definition of "authoritative", but I wrote a two part 4500 word article on C2/C3 replacement tires for The Corvette Restorer a year ago, and it will likely answer any questions you have and much more.

Thanks Duke - I pulled the Restorer issues and read your article. Very informative! I've got repro KO's so the 215s shouldn't be a problem. Your article will be a big help in picking a tire.
