I have a frame off '67 L-68 Coupe, that was done in 1999 when it had 38,070 miles on it. It looked and ran perfectly. In 2001 I had knee surgery and the car sat covered, 2002 more surgery and the car sat again. I would start it occasionally, but couldn't drive it. Last year I was able to drive it again. It now has 39109 on it so you can tell how much driving has been going on. It ran well with the exception off the carbs. When I opened the throttle and got it up to about 3500-4500 R.P.M. it started laying down. Not back firing thru the carbs. or exhaust, just not making anymore power. At that time I changed points, plugs, cond., rotor, cap, and checked the timing, and had the carbs professionally rebuilt, and at that time the mechanic told me the carbs were in beautiful condition, but I had him do them anyway. Well the problem is exactly the same, and that is my situation, so any suggestions will be greatly appricated.

Chris,
There could be a several things wrong but it will take a good mechanic a few minutes with the car to diagnose your problem. My recommendation is to find a good mechanic, tell him the symptoms and give him some room.

Did you get fresh gas? Gas a couple of years old can start and run a car but often will not make power.
It is also possible that the fuel pump has gone bad and isn't pumping gas to the carbs. That though usually sounds like you are running out of gas, where the engine goes lean and often make a slight surge of power before dropping off.
Along those lines you could have junk in the tank that is clogging the screen so that under a high draw, the material covers the screen and at low draw, the screen manages to stay open enough to pass sufficient fuel.- Top
