    '66 L79 V-belt part number help

Can anyone tell me the GM parts numbers for the two V-belts that go on a '66 L79 that has no options? My car had two belts; a captive belt that went around only the water pump and crank pulleys and a 2nd belt that went around the water pump pulley, the crank pulley and the alternator pulley. The only place I've been able to find a GM part number for the longer belt is in the Paragon catalog, which says the alternator belt was 54" long and was GM part # 3861946. Can anyone confirm this number and does anyone know the GM part # for the captive belt.

    Thanks,

    Gary

    Re: '66 L79 V-belt part number help

    Gary------

The alternator belt was, indeed, GM #3861946. This was a 3/8" X 54" belt of "wrapped" construction.

The captive belt (also sometimes called the waterpump belt) was of GM #3871258. This belt was 3/8" X 37-1/2" and also of "wrapped" construction.

        Re: '66 L79 V-belt part number help

Gotta tell you about what happened to me last week.

I was looking for this same belt for my '63. I didn't want to wait for a special order. But as you are well aware, I'm sure, it is darned difficult to locate any fan belt anywhere these days that is black and smooth on both sides! I stopped at a dozen of the local parts stores - they had ribs, grooves, waves, colors - it's like buying condoms. In despiration, I decided to try a Chevy dealer on my way home. When I asked, the parts guy looked at me over his glasses and snickered. But he said he had seen an old belt hanging in the attic. Off he went. He returned with a very dusty belt wrapped in a very dusty orange and black GM belt wrapper. It said the belt was 7/16" by 37". Rats. But it sure looked about right. This was an old Dayco belt with the size printed right on it. And that said .44" x 54". What are the chances? He got me for $17 (a few more snickers), but he probably didn't realize that's half the price the Corvette vendors get today.

          Source for repro belts?

Can anyone tell me, in terms of reproduction belts for mid-year cars, is Quanta Products better or worse than any other source?

            Re: Source for repro belts?

To the best of my knowledge, there are (or were) only two reproduction sources, and Quanta is one of them. The other is (or was) Z06 Products. A few years ago Z06 was acquired by Corvette Central; I have no idea who, if anyone, still makes belts or anything under the Z06 name.

So odds are, no matter what vendor you may purchase them from, the belts came from Quanta anyway.

              L79 V-belt part - '67?

Joe - Would your answer also hold true for '67 L-79, no powers or air?

              Thanks.

                Tom-----

I would expect that 67 would be the same since the pullies were the same (for L-79 equipped as you describe). However, I can't confirm it inasmuch as I have conflicting information from different GM sources.

                  Re: '66 L79 V-belt P/N additional info

                  Gary/Joe - For what it's worth in checking my Oct. 66 Chev Parts & Accessories Catalog, I found p/n 3871258 (3/8 x 37-1/2 ) in G/N 1.066 listed for 65 CORVETTE w/ Sp. H/Per, F.I. (327) (2nd design) (exc C.A.C., P/S) and p/n 3837810 (3/8 x 34-13/32) listed for 65 CORVETTE (396), 66 CORVETTE (427) (exc C.A.C.), 66 CORVETTE w/Sp. H/Per (327) (exc C.A.C., P/S). Note that the p/n 3837810 is also listed in the '66 AIM for the 427 engine. Pete

Captive belt 3837810? I think so.

                    Pete,

I think you are correct. I found my old captive belt last night and it measures 34.5" +/-, so I think it must be the 3837810 part.
