C1 exhaust differences

What are the differences from year to year in the pipes on 57-62? Paragon has 14 different systems with 57/58 the same (4 different versions), 59/60 the same(4 versions), 61/62 the same (4 versions) and then 2 more 62 2" systems.

the JGM just says they were black (61/62)

My question is what is the difference between the Hi.perf. systems (oval or round) with crossover (3989K/3991K)and the Hi.Perf. 2" system (2 1/2" manifold) (5670K)in Paragons catalog?

I can assume the first system has a smaller diameter pipe but how were these pipes originally supplied?

As to the black...

the descriptions I have heard (and seen in photos) was it was a gloss black asphalt paint which burned off so fast the exhaust system was probably starting to rust by the time the dealers delivered the cars.

Chris,

Your question is still a little vague. Seems to me you should give Paragon a call concerning items from the catalog. No one here is going to be able to address the difference in these configurations unless they have an example in front of them.

To Dennis's point, if your question is what particular pipe configuration is correct for your car, then you need to bring that info to the table.

Armed with this information, you can ask Paragon if the pipes they have possess the charactistics identified by the folks here.

1. There's 2" and 2 1/2" systems.

2. Tailpipes on 61-62 are different than 56-60.

3. There's oval and round mufflers.

4. Some have crossover pipes. Some do not.

5. Mix and match above 4.

My car is a 62 340hp.

I called Paragon and they have four 1962 systems available for Hi perf engines. The person I talked to did not know the reasons for the differences but here are the differences:

1) Hi.Perf. w/oval mufflers and crossover pipe 2 1/2" pipe
2) Hi.Perf. w/round off road mufflers and crossover pipe 2 1/2" pipe
3) Hi.Perf. unknown mufflers and crossover pipe 2 1/2" manifold 2" pipe
4) w/ FI unknown mufflers and crossover pipe 2 1/2" manifold 2" pipe

Which are correct for mine? I know the off road was an option.

340 HP came with:

2 1/2" exhaust manifolds (901 and 902);
a crossover; and,
the oval mufflers.

I believe the round mufflers were an option. I believe the round mufflers were called "off road." Pretty sure that there were only 2 kinds of mufflers - round and oval.

Some people think the oval mufflers are too quiet. Some people think that the round mufflers reproduced today don't sound right.

2" exhaust manifolds came on the 250 HP engine. Therefore, a 2" system came on the 250 HP car. The 2 1/2" system came on the 300, 340, and 360(FI) HP engines to mate up to the 2 1/2" manifolds that came with those cars.

The 2" and 2 1/2" systems only refers to the head pipes. And then only to the first few inches of the headpipes. The 2 1/2" pipes narrow to less than 2" after the first few inches of the headpipes. After that, the 2" and 2 1/2" are identical back through the tailpipes. The 2" and 2 1/2" pretty much only refers to the openings on the headpipes to mate up to the manifolds.

Hmmm.., that means that the 2" pipe Hi.perf. system offered by Paragon for 62 would be for higher HP engines with incorrect smaller base exhaust manifolds.

All '62 systems had two inch pipes, but the 300 HP w/manual trans,340 and 360 HP engines had 2.5" manifolds, so the front of the head pipes had to be expanded up to match the manifold outlets.

All 250 and 300 HP w/Powerglide had two inch manifolds, so they require different head pipes.

If you have a '62 AIM you can match what is available to what was included for each engine/trans combination plus and the "off-road" muffler option.

it is also possible that Paragon is offering a 2 1/2 inch pipe system for "Peformance" applicationc without regard for originality, again ome can only find this out by asking them the configuration of the 2 1/2 inch system.
