    67 corvette

    Hi

I am about to buy a 67 Corvette with a faulty speedometer...

Does any know if a problem with the speedometer is a common failure on a 67 Corvette. The seller has changed the gearbox from M21 to M22. Can it cause the failure ?

Suppose it is the small gear in the M22 which i broken.... is it hard to replace ? The gaguege does not work at all....what can it be wrong ?

Any help will be gladly appreciated !

    Thanks in advance !

    Anders

Can be several causes of the problem and you've got to investigate and fault isolate. Speedo itself can be a 'goner' but not to worry AC-Delco/United Delco have a robust network of independent shops all across the country who can diagnose and repair on either a carry in or make appointment basis. Could be broken drive cable. Could be squared ends of drive cable are chewed up causing lack of drive.

Could be bad drive or driven gear(s) in tranny. If it's the gear inside the tranny tail housing, you're into a reasonable sum to R&R the transmission (might as well replace clutch and throw-out bearing while you've got the tranny down....

As far as is the '67 Corvette known to have faulty design speedo system, this is a joke, right? System is pretty much the same as all other Chevy car/truck of the era and they were sold in SUBSTANTIAL quantity. The deal on Corvette is its nostalgia profile keeps it on the road in reasonable numbers so you see long term wear aspects that the balance of the car/truck line really didn't have the 'honor' of being life tested....

Hi Thank you very much for your answer !

Suppose it it is the drive gear in the tranny....Do I have to take the tranny down or can I work on it while it is still in the car ?

            Anders----

There are TWO gears in the transmission which are related to speedometer operation-----the speedometer DRIVE gear and the speedometer DRIVEN gear. The DRIVE gear is mounted on the transmission mainshaft. If this gear requires service, the transmission must be removed from the car and, at least, partially disassembled. For an ORIGINAL 67 transmission, this gear is steel and seldom gives trouble.

The speedometer DRIVEN gear is easily serviced with the transmission installed in the car. All that is necessary is to remove the speedometer adapter. This is accomplished by removal of the adapter retainer and bolt installed on the transmission tailshaft housing and subsequently pulling out the adapter with gear. Installation is the reverse of the above. Always install a new o-ring on the adapter prior to re-installation.
