C-1 Steering Wheel

I need a steering wheel for my 1959. I have found repros from $399-$599, a fully retored wheel for $900, $350 for an original in need of restoration and a near perfect original that does not need to be restored for $800. The unrestored original is tempting but is the price realistic ? Any opinions ?

Seems to me that Gary, the steering wheel restorer in Carlisle, Pa charged about 250 to do my 61 wheel about 5 to 7 years ago. it was broken at one of the radius. he does super work. mike

Garys prices have gone up some. He just did my 61 wheel and it was $415 including return shipping. He did a great job and I would highly recommend him.

I would buy the original, near perfect wheel that doesn't need restoring. Hands down.

To me it depends on what you are going to do with the car. If it will be judged and rarely drive, the original might work. If it will be driven, consider the repro. I would be afraid that an original wheel (over 40 years old) might crack or break if used very much (as mine did many years ago). Mark at Delkon in Louisianna did my 60 and although it has not been judged, I think it looks great. I don't remember the price but I know it was much lees than $400 (one year ago). Don H.
