    C2 Clutch Replacement

I have the clutch out of my 65 Roadster, since I had the transmission out I figured I would check it for wear. The plate and flywheel surfaces look very good, no big heat spots etc. The clutch never chattered or slipped and always worked fine. So whats the question; the clutch disk is probably about 2/3's worn, the rivets are close, so should I just change out the disc? any cause for concern if I don't replace the whole package? I called my local chevy dealer it is no longer available, tried the catalogs but most want to sell the whole clutch kit. Can you tell me who is a good supplier of a good quality disk?

    Thanks in advance,

    George

    Re: C2 Clutch Replacement

If the clutch performed well prior to disassembly, you could just have the friction material replaced and install a new release bearing. You'll have to check around for a local clutch disk rebuilder.

In So Cal we have a place that replaces the friction material on Cosworth Vega clutch disks. The CV disk has a unique damper assembly, and they are no longer available new, so replacing the friction material has proved to be a good solution, and it only costs about twenty bucks.

George, suggest that you contact Carolina Clutch in Charlotte. It is my understanding that they will reline your disc and, if necessary, rebuild pressure plate.

        Hey George -

If the car is a driver and you're not concerned about originality, consider going with an aftermarket clutch like the Hays Street/Strip clutch. Also, you can free up a lot engine bay space and have a smooth C5 feel pedal by replacing the mechanical linkage with a hydraulic clutch release. I wrote an article on the conversion that appeared in the April 2004 issue of "Corvette Enthusiast". I can send you a reprint if you want, e-mail me at mghaluska@aol.com.

Look in the Yellow Pages for your area for places that'll reline the disc. Most cities have clutch places where the trucks and other industrial equipment get this done.
