I have a 1966 427 convert. which I am rstoring. When I purchased the car 6 yrs ago it had crome valve covers. Are these correct, could they come from the factory or are they aftermarket?

NO 1966 Corvette was ever originally equipped with chrome valve covers. The only Corvettes ever ORIGINALLY equipped with chrome valve covers were as follows:
1) 1955 with V-8
2) 1968 with L-79
3) 1967 Corvettes with L-89
4) all 1968-70 Corvettes with big block engines
5) possibly, some very early 1971 Corvettes with big block
The valve covers which you have may be PRODUCTION-type valve covers which someone later retrofitted to the car. These valve covers were available in SERVICE from GM for many years. They were GM-discontinued quite a few years ago, but have been available in reproduction for the past several years.
You may also have aftermarket chrome valve covers. If the covers have any embossed name, insignia, or "creases" or "ribs", then they are aftermarket or GM SERVICE-only type covers equivalent to aftermarket.
