Re: Big Block cockpit heat
Went to Albuquerque Regional two years back with RMC member who drove his '64 silver coupe FI with through frame exhaust. While tranny tunnel heated up nicely, it was maybe 10 degrees less than my experience in similar '65 BB cars.
My '65 BB (not a driver) convertible with side exhaust EXERCISES the engine compartment side louver vents. You can 'feel' 'em working by running hand along fenders after short trip and engine shut down. Surface of fender over side louver paths is uncomfortable to touch compared to SB cars.
On the '65 BB coupe another RMC member is readying for the gauntlet of Founders final run on National Road Trip to Sun Valley, we've been working OVERTIME. This is a through frame 396 coupe that's a 'challenge'. It's a Noland Adams survey car where EVERY piece of original factory power train has been pulled and stored (some future owner might wish to restore and almost EVERY component is casting/date documented) and a full race power plant (car sees action at local drag strip) put in its place.
This car dynos 635 HP at altitude (7K feet) and is VERY 'tricked out'. Owner had to sweat to get Chapter level 3rd Flight qualifier for Founders Award and is DARN PROUD of his 3rd Flight!!!! Needless to say we're talking about a coupe without A/C that runs HOT for LD drives!
Many tweaks have been made to get away from drag strip performance center back to 'docile' street use. One 'tweak' that cut interior floor/tranny tunnel temp by roughly 15 degrees was to install later Shark era foam collar between bellhousing and tunnel. But, in my book, BB MY car's underhood temp really is higher than SB and the delta is probably in the 25 F range....
