I took a good look at a real nice H-72 dated jack today. Bearing Unpainted. Threaded rod painted on smooth part, threads unpainted but may have worn off from being used. I did notice a two tone finish and think it has to do with how paint dries on cold rolled steel as compared to stamping steel. Bottom four arms are 1 1/4" X1/4" bar stock and are duller. All other parts are stamped and have more shine. Base .085 thick metal. Upper arms and center formed channel are 3/16" metal Top is .135 thick metal. Stamped steel has a smooth finish but cold rolled bar stock is a rough finish and using the same paint may have a different shade. Lyle

Re: C-3 Jack Finish Revisited
Lyle,
I don't think of jacks as being painted in the traditional sense. I think of them as being "dipped in paint". They are on a conveyor held by the threaded rod and dipped in a paint vat. After drying they are assembled with a bearing and pin. Being suspended by the threaded rod results in some of the rod being black and most being natural.
The process results in drips and errors far beyond my imagination.

Re: C-3 Jack Finish Revisited
I think you are correct that this part was dipped and has many runs. The question the other day on this board was how the finish could be two different shades. I worked in an auto plant and made many of thease dip tanks in my years as a sheet metal worker. I am not sure this part was painted as an assembly but a futher look will tell if all the runs could have happened in one hanging position and for sure the bearing was not painted.

Re: C-3 Jack Finish Revisited
Lyle,
Not only was the bearing not painted, but for sure - on mine at least - the threaded portion of the screw, and about 1/2-inch of the unthreaded portion, is not painted. I can't figure out any way they could have done that without painting before assembly. I can't find a pin on mine either, but I think there were some design changes sometime after 1972. We should have a jack seminar at an upcoming meet.Terry- Top

Re: C-3 Jack Finish Revisited
On the one I described the threads wre unpainted except the last two and the unthreaded part was all black. You can see this Jack next thursday as we will all be together for some more fun. I still have a few things to do before I load my car for judging. It's nice to prepare a couple cars for Winsor. Has anyone did two PV's at one meet? LyleLyle
