Okay all you late-63 owners, where does your car fit into this?
When I bought my '63, it had a top ignition shield with three metal rivets holding the insulator. It has always been my understanding that this is correct for roughly the latter half of the '63 production run. The two metal rivet version of this shield is for the '64.
This belief has been reinforced by the '63/64 JM where on p. 104, it says, "In 1963 models, three stainless steel rivets secure an opaque mylar insulator..." Then further along, it says, "In 1964 models, two metal rivets are used to secure the opaque insulator." So far so good.
In checking Nolan Adams' restoration guide for other info this afternoon, I stumbled upon the apparent fact that the two metal rivet top shield was used in all late 63's as well. This is from the very bottom of p. 164:
"The 3848306 (i.e. two metal rivet) shield was first reported by 30867S120390 (20,390). After its introduction, the 3848306 shield was used for the balance of 1963 and through 1964 production."
My baby is number 21,102, and Nolan is saying I have the wrong top shield. This overlap is not surprising (I see it a lot), and I'm certainly in no position to disagree with Nolan. But could someone with a late '63 please verify that they have the two metal rivet top ignition shield design?
Could you also verify that you have an EXTRA two metal rivet shield that you are willing to part with?
Thanks as always for your insight!
Pete
