For the past year or my steering box has been leaking fluid or grease from the pinion seal. My front end started to shimmy recently, no matter what speed I am traveling. Can this be from the leak in the steering box? Also, the box must be empty now, not leaking anymore. Rebuild required?

Re: C3 Steering Box

I don't think that the steering box and the shimmy are related. Many other factors are MUCH more likely contributors to the shimmy problem. Wheel balance, bent wheels, idler arm, tie-rod ends, and ball joints are the most likely causes.
As far as the steering box goes, you need to replace the pinion seal. However, to do this, you need to remove the box from the car and disassemble it. So, for all practical purposes, it's rebuild time.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

STRONGLY agree with Joe....
fix by guesstimation is NOT the way to go on suspension related components. Shimmy, especially related to a given speed range, can result from the plurality of 'opps' issues Joe describes and a GOOD chassis/suspension shop can fine tune the diagnosis.
Out of round steel wheels (curb hit) can/do cause such funnies that your average wheel/tire guy simply can't find (we dynamically balance off the car these days).... Plus, if an out-of-round wheel has driven any appreciable milage on fresh rubber, it's commond to find the tires have taken a 'set' due to tread squirm.
Once this happens, correcting all the underlying problems and re-using the tires whose tread has taken a 'set' defies correction! You can really pull you hair out changing this/that and not fixing the problem(s) by dividing repair services among different vendors/shops.....- Top
