    FAKE E-Bay Warning via e-mail - Beware

    TO: E-BAY Users: I just got a fake warning notice from E-Bay, telling me there have been attempts to log on (to my ID) from a "foriegn address".

    IF YOU GET ANYTHING SIMILAR, DO NOT REPLY. This was simply a bogus or "spoof" attempt to get your e-bay ID and password. (It didn't work on this old coot.) One "tip off" - If you highlight the "from address" you will see a misspelling of what looks like an e-bay.com address.

    Due to such activities, I HAVE RECENTLY ACCEPTED A FREE TOOLBAR FROM E-BAY THAT INCLUDES AN "ACCOUNT GUARD" AREA. The "guard" area will flash a warning if you are on a site that is a "spoof" version of e-bay's pages, or paypal's pages, or other pages associated with eBay. This account guard thingy turns green when you are on a legitimate e-bay page.

    Yes, I am sure the free toolbar is legit...

      Tom,

      thanks for the heads up - had a similar situation happen to me this weekend - got a bogus email for an auction that closed in December, stating that payment had been approved and wanted me to verify by logging in to PayPal! Of course I ddin't and forwarded the email to eBay.

      FYI - Hadn't heard about the eBay taskbar, but will definitely be looking for it tonite when I get home.

          I, occassionally, ask a seller, on Ebay, a question about their item. When the seller responds, I get an email from them answering the question. Recently I have received 2 different bogus emails, supposedly, answering my questions about an item. It looks just like a legit response from a seller. It even includes an item number! What I did was to go to Ebay and enter an item number search. In both cases the item didn't exist!! They keep trying!!

              Note that the ebay toolbar is also considered "spyware." In other words, don't think someone somewhere doesn't know where your browser is looking, even if you're not on ebay at the time.

              I tried the ebay toolbar and my spyware checkers lit up like a Christmas tree. Remember, it's free for a reason. I no longer have it installed.

                      i do not even have a e bay account and i get these e mails about my paypal account from so called e bay.
