Re: 3861968 SBC Balancer

I can tell you this: balancer GM #3861968 lead a very short life. It was used in PRODUCTION only for the 1965 model year. For Corvettes, its usage was confined to 1965 for cars with 250 or 300 hp engines. It was also used in passenger cars for 1965 with 283 and 327 engines.
This balancer was available in SERVICE from November, 1964 (when it replaced balancer GM #3817684) until November, 1965 (when it was replaced by balancer GM #3861970). Its SERVICE applications included most 1955-64 small block applications with 300 hp or less, except SHP.
If someone out there has a 1965 Corvette with 250 or 300 hp engine and a known-original balancer, that person or persons holds the key to the description of this balancer. My vague recollection of this balancer is that it is a non-stepped balancer of about 6" OD and about 3/4" thickness. It has a hub section that is 4-1/2" OD. Hopefully, someone with a car with the correct balancer can describe it for us. Then, we'll all know.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top
