    C2 Insulation Installation Method

I searched the archives for a method of installing firewall insulation in my 1964 coupe. I've heard this can really be a fun job for the uninformed like me.

I keep seeing a reference to an article in the Fall 2002 issue of The Corvette Restorer by Armand Filer covering his installation technique, but sadly, no mention of the specific technique itself other than it involves using a piece of string, and is not the same as the factory method which employed two people, a heat lamp and some duckbill pliers (none of which I have immediate access to).

Since I am a recent NCRS member without access to the Fall 2002 Restorer, could someone please share Armand's installation technique with me and others?

    Thanks!

I can tell you what worked for me. I first used a conical rasp and put a 45 degree champher on the interior edge.Don't go too big or the retainer won't work. I then put a small amount of lubricant( silicone greese ) on the interior side. Then I heated the rubber plug and then used the tool , which looks like a screwdriver with the end ground off. Then I pushed as hard as I could and only broke one getting the job done. It was tough.Hope this helps. Jerry

I did like Jerry did and also put a small chamfer on the interior side and lubricated the holes. (I believe I remember John Hinckley saying that the factory used heat lamps over the plugs to keep them pliable and soft and kept them submerged in a soapy solution until ready to be used.)

I used a tool that's for putting in tire plugs which has a nice grip handle and a blunt end. I didn't heat them up but wish I had. I pushed the end through and gently grabbed the end with a set of duckbill pliers and pulled them through. I broke a couple and pulled the end off of one which probably wouldn't have happened if they had been heated. I had bought some extras in anticipation of this.

      Good Luck,
