    C2 vent window frame

Can someone tell me if the vent window frame is SS or is it plated. It does attract a magnet.
    Thanks Mike

Mike; I had my 65 coupe vent window welded this winter. The hinge spot welds seperated from the vent frame. Buffed and cleaned all parts then tig welded as SS. To my knowledge it stainless. Denis

If it attracts a magnet, it is a low carbon plated steel. If it was a 304 or 316 stainless steel it would not attact a magnet. A 409 grade stainless will attract a magnet but I doubt it is made of that.

Agree with dennis. i've had to stainless weld several coupe hinges, and then simply buffed away the discoloration associated with stainless mig welding of the two seperated pieces. BTW, remove the glass, drill a couple 1/8" holes thru the window frame, then weld the hinge fron the glass side of the window frame. no telltale weld beads judgable. mike

              Must Be SS

I had the vent hinge welded on and the heat marks buff right off. So it must be SS. I'm glad I had it welded with SS rod. The guy who welded it for thought it was plated and wanted to use steel rod. I started to doubt myself when the magnet seemed to stick really hard to it. I thought it may stick to some SS but the hold wouldn't seem as firm.
              Thanks Mike

Most GM vent windows, but not Corvette, were made at the GM hardware plant in Trenton NJ. From the time I started there in '60 until vent windows were dropped from most passenger cars for '68, I never saw a stainless glass frame. It seems unlikely that the Corvette would have been made differently than all the others. Cold rolled steel can be polished and buffed to look like stainless, it just won't stay that way. The frames on my '64 are chrome plated cold rolled steel for sure.

I just had my 66 convertible vent windows chrome plated. I don't think that the chrome plater would plate a SST substrate.

Is it conceiveable that Coupes are stainless and convt. are chrome?
