C2 Manual Window Regulator Gear

Hello All -
My 66 Driver's side window does not want to roll up. It takes a lot of effort and is making a grinding noise in the crank area. I think there is a problem with the regulator gear. I popped the inner door panel off and discovered that access to this area is slim to none. How does one get to the gear to repair it. Does the whole window and linkage assembly have to come out as a unit? Any hints from someone who's been there and done that would be welcome. Thanks -P.J.

You need to remove the window to get the regulator out. (Coupe)
To remove the window....
1. Remove the rear lower track inside the door. (2 screws on the rear of the door)
2. Remove the nuts that hold the regulator to the window support channel on the bottom of the glass. You'll need to roll the window up to align the bolts with the access holes in the inner door panel......The window comes out WITH the bottom support channel still on the glass
3. Carefully remove the window from the remaining channels and slide it out between the door and the inner panel. There is a notch cutout for this purpose on the inner door, at the top slot.
4. Remove the screws that hold the regulator on the inner door and slide the regulator out.
You may want to study the AIM before you attack this just to get a feel for the various parts.

Thanks Steve - My car is a convertible but I imagine the process is the same.
