    Hash Marks

    All:

I have confirmed that the pictured main cap special studs, purchased from Paragon, are indeed GM issue parts. These are for use with SHP smallblock engines with large capacity oil pan and solid lifters, circa 1962-1970, 302/327/350 c.i..
3 hashmarks signifies grade 5 fasteners. 5 hashmarks signifies grade 8. What does 4 hashmarks signify?
Thanks, Joe L. for the heads up on Paragon being supplied by GM in this instance. That information made life much easier for me, and also put my mind at ease as to using the best part for this very critical application.

    Joe

    Re: Hash Marks

    Joe-----

The picture didn't come through. However, I'm not aware of "4 hash marks" as a strength coding in the SAE or GM systems. Usually main studs are not marked as to strength so, perhaps, these marks have some other significance. In any event, the GM parts are going to be of the required material property class. You don't need to be concrened about that, at all.

To see the photo - Step by step

      1. "Right Click" on the spot where the photo should have been.
      2. Select "properties" from the bottom of the list shown.
      3. Highlight - Mouse Drag across the complete name of the photo (a web address ending in .jpg)and hit copy icon (or control/C).
      4. Paste (or control/V to insert) that name in the "address" line on the top of your browser screen.
      5. Hit enter or press the "go" button.

I am still thinking about why this photo did not show up. It should have...

        The Photo

        Tom:

Thanks for the interest, and advice. If I just right click on the spot where the image should have been, and then click on "view image", I get a full sized view of the picture. After that, the image appears when I go back to my post. I am not sure why the photo doesn't appear at first, but, bear with me, it is my first stab at it, and I am grateful that it even shows up. I couldn't tell you what I did, but I'll try to get it better the next time. AAhhh, the wonders of technology! My browser is Netscape 7.1, and the photo is stored at www.webshots.com.

        Thanks again.

        Joe

Joe - don't some of the GM original fasteners for main caps have the "diamalloy" symbol, which I thought was grade 9? Sort of like a rectangle with caved in sides....Craig
