    Rebuilt carb reinstall- '62 327/340

    Gentlemen- andother dumb question:

I have gotten back my 3269S carb from being rebuilt in St Louis and am going to re-install tonight. Since the carb is obviously bone-dry, is there a 'best way' to prime the carb with gas before trying to fire her up, or do I just install and crank until the pump fills the bowl? If the latter, would a shot or two of ether help things along? Please forgive the naive questions, these issues aren't so obvious to those of us raised on EFI cars..... Thanks!

Fill each bowl through the bowl vents. A syringe works well. fill until the fuel just dribbles out of the discharge nozzles in the booster venturi. Then go through the normal cold start procedure.

Excellent, Thanks Duke- I happen to have a bunch of syringes in lab, so I'm good to go.

Good, Rob. Can you measure the cc required to fill the bowls so all us AFB guys can have it for future reference. They are probably different on each side because of the acceleration pump well. Just a WAG, but I figure about 30-40 cc per bowl.

        Thanks!

I agree it'd be useful to know how much the bowls held. Don't mean to discourage you from measuring and posting your results.

But I do this every year. I simply give each side 2 syringe-fulls. May not fill the bowls, but it's certainly more than enough to get the car started.

            Chris-

No problem, I will do the experiment and report the data. The catch is of course that I will have to go home and look at my Carter AFB book and/or the ST-12 to figure out where the bowl vents and booster venturis are......

The bowl vents are those 4 brass jobbies coming out of the carb body at an upwards angle toward the center. They vent right in the middle of the carb throats.

The booster venturis are down in the carb throats. They're the jobbies just above the throttle plates, sticking out in the airstream.

The ST-12 has a great section on AFB carbs.

The passenger side fuel bowl holds about 65 cc. I got too impatient to fill the other side and fired her up, but the wife quickly ixnay'ed the 'revving of the beast' at 11 PM, So in the name of neighborhood/marital harmony, I have to wait until she's safely in Chicago this evening.....
