' fuel tank leak barry miller my ' seems to only be able to tolerate the addition of about gallons of fuel and even then will emit strong fuel odors and sometimes leak a small amount on the garage floor when parked i do not attempt to add fuel to the tank until the gauge is just above empty but the accuracy of the gauge has never been proven although it seems to work correctly is this a common problem if so is this an extremely complex fix i'm not afraid to tackle it but am wondering if i want to tackle just prior to winter storage is there a simple way to prove the accuracy of the gauge so i can rule out the possibility that i am simply over filling the tank thanx in advance for the help barry

Re: '61 Fuel Tank Leak
re ' fuel tank leak j grantham you either have a hole in side of the tank or the rubber hose that connects the filler to the tank is rotten and cracked i have a and i think the design is the same my hose was cracked and had the same symptoms when filled over full there is a vent hose that comes from the top of the tank over to the filler cap compartment this hose was rotten too you can remove the plug from the bottom right side and drain the tank to see how much fuel is in it that should tell you about the accuracy of the gauge next step is to remove the cover over the tank and look for the leak j grantham- Top
