    63 Steering column

I just got a correct steering column for my 63. The car had a 64 column in it since I have owned the car. The column I have is black and I need to paint it saddle to match my interior. Does anyone know where to stop the paint color? Is it just under the dash or all the way to the fire wall? Also does anyone have any experience in taking a column apart? Is it an easy thing to do? I was thinking I could get a much better paint job if the column is apart and I could check and replace any worn out parts at that time. I would also like to replace the directional knob which is damaged. Does it unscrew or pop out? I do have the AIM and shop manual for the car.
Thanks for any assistance as always

    Bob,

Taking the column apart should be no problem, putting it back together could be a little troublesome. Nah, there is nothing to a 63. It is the simple one on the block.

You will probably have to replace the entire lever and knob since the knob is either molded or very tight on the rod. They can be bought at any "Trim Parts" dealer for $14.95 or less.

If you need assistance with the column just e-mail.

The break for the black vs. the saddle tan is at or about 1 inch below the clamp. Should not be a worry for the judges.

    Regards,

Bob, from the top of the steering jacket the saddle paint will cover 12 inches. Where the saddle paint ends, it just fades to black as if it becomes over spray. Also, the black tape is 13 1/4 inches from the top of the steering jacket. See page 195 in the 63 AIM. If you send me your email address, I'll send you a photo of mine as it is still out of the car.
