    GM 6223 Crankshaft - update

A week or so ago there was a thread discussing the GM 396/427 forged steel crankshafts, forging ID 3856223 at Howards Cams. Joe had ordered 3 and reported they looked perfect with no flaws. I have one coming, it is in transit via UPS and I will have it Monday. I spoke today with a representative at Howards Cams as to their origin and history.

First, I did verify these (in conjunction with their sister company, Competition Products, both in the same facility in Oshkosh WI) are genuine GM crankshafts, there was concern raised they may not be of GM manufacture and this is not the case. In fact, they are buying these up in lots from GM directly, not a 3rd party source. They come in on the GM specialized crates just as they were handled internally in the engine plants. They had about 2700+ at one point, but they have drastically reduced their inventory. I don't know how long these have been out of production, but the rep I spoke with thought it had been at least several years. He indicated they were coming to them in lots from GM with some regularity, but the last they received was about 9 months ago, and they are just depleting the stock. One other interesting point, they do have a limited number that are tuftrided (nitride surface hardening) and these are not advertised directly but they will sell them for $239.95 each plus shipping. Competition Products is selling the tuftrided version for $299.95, and the standard for $249.95. However, Howards is selling the same units for $239.95 plus shipping for the tuftrided and $99.95 including shipping for the standard version. So thier is a slight riff going on between the two groups on that point. The blowout price of $99.95 including shipping is a loss leader for the new Howards Cams Website, they are using it to hopefully attract business (kind of like the free turkey at the grocery store around Thanksgiving if you shop at a store). Apparently there are not many of the tuftrided units left, but they do have some.

They basically clean up every crankshaft, removing the storage cosmoline from the journals, and lightly polish each journal to check it before shipment to a customer to insure there are no nicks, pits, or defects. Then they box it and ship.

They were very strong that these are genuine GM crankshafts, purchased by them directly from GM, and that Howards/Competion Products had jointly worked a deal with GM to buy up all remianing stock from GM when they discontinued the part.........Craig

competion products sell a lot of GM surplus as i have bought both BBC and SBC aluminum GM water pumps from them for less than $50. the GM casting numbers were ground off of the pump castings.

I just bought one. Don't really need one but for a Franklin I can't pass it up. You couldn't buy a POS rusty, crusty, beat up crank at a swap meet for that, plus free shipping. Just something else to stump my toe on around the garage.

I could not resist and bought two of these after Joe posted. When I ordered they offered tuftride for an extra $50 per crank and custom box for extra $25. That is quite bit different than the numbers Craig got for tuftride.

Jerry - sure is, I wonder why. Did you get the tuftride? I got mine yesterday, and unpacked it tonight.....it looks great, just like Joe observed, it is a first rate piece. I did notice it wasn't crossdrilled, maybe only the tuftrided cranks are crossdrilled...Craig

i would guess that only the solid lifter BBC use crossed drilled cranks. i never had a lower HP hyd lifter 396/427 apart.

Re: GM 6223 Crankshaft - update

Clem - one other question, if I choose to cross drill later (since that is the only difference) on the tuftrided crank, is there any issue with the drill cutting through the case hardened surface layer? I am guessing that the machine show would have carbide tipped bits to do this operation anyway. I don't want to soften the surface just to cross drill and that would be a reason not to do it I guess..thx!....Craig

i would not mess with cross drilling as it is not needed unless you are planing on going over 7000 rpms the better choice is the mains with 210 degree oiling. these inserts have a oil groove in the lower shell but only part way down on both sides to allow full oiling like cross drilling

                            Craig,
I don't understand the price difference either. One of the sales people was making a mistake. Who knows which. I did not get the tuftride because I don't know what I am going to do with these yet. Just a sucker for a deal. If need be I will get it done locally. I just did not want to pay for it in an application where I did not need it. I got mine today ( feel sorry for the UPS man ). I will get them open here soon. Thanks
