    it will still be enought voltage to light the bulb. you ground the bulb to a good ground not the - side of the coil. you can also use a volt meter if you have one

      Thank you all for the responses. With your help I think I'll be able to pin this down. I had hoped to work on it yesterday but the Mrs. had a long list of yard chores.
      I'll let you know what I find out.

        mike you never did say; how did you check the fuel pump?? with a pressure gauge?? other?? i had one that was fine with increasing pressure until 2,500 rpm and then the pressure dropped. someone that installed it bent and kinked the rubber fuel line and that let in air etc. it sounds like the fuel pump. why not just replace it?? it doesn't cost much, and you've done everything else.

          Thanks. With the help of all of you here,I came to the same conclusion.I am going replace it put in new rubber lines.

            I had a similar problem once on a 67 sb, turned out to be a chaffed wire from the points inside the dist, it would touch randomly and ground out killing car, sometimes it would run for while others not ten feet, also had same problem on 67 pontiac tempest back in 68. check your wires for bare spots, good luck.
