    69 Big Block Timing

What is the best timing setting for a 69 L68 4 spd? The service manual states 4 deg Before TDC @ 800 RPM (under hood sticker says 750 RPM). That was with good old leaded gasoline. With today's lower octane unleaded should I make any adjustments to these settings? What is the right idle speed 800 or 750? Also, do the leaded additives work?

I don't have specifics regarding the big blocks. But if you are pinging using today's fuels, you might retard your intial advance a bit. I think they my old manuals on my Fords say up to 4 degrees. If you still are pinging, you might look at adjusting the vacuum advance or centrifugal advance. Downside is if you retard too much, you can expect the engine to run hotter.
