Re: Engine enamel application on 427
John-----
You didn't mention what year that your dealing with, but here's the deal for 68-69:
The valve covers were chrome and installed and ALL 427 intake manifolds were aluminum. So, NO engine paint was applied at the head/intake manifold interface, at all. I believe that the intake manifold and valve covers were covered in some way when the engine was painted. Intake manifolds may have been painted with aluminum paint as delievered to St. Louis.
For 1966-67 427s, most 427 valve covers were painted (except 1967 L-89). The only 427 intake manifold that was painted was the 390 hp. So, for the 390 hp, the engine was painted without masking off either the valve covers or the intake manifold as both were to be included in the engine painting. For L-72, L-71, L-68 and L-88 engines, the intake manifold was covered in some way and the rest of the engine was painted. Intake manifolds were often "touched up" or, even, completely painted with aluminum paint to cover any engine paint overspray. Sometimes, engine overspray is seen on the edges of the intake manifold.
For 1967 L-89s, painting was the same as all 68-69 427s.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top
