My original (as far as I can tell) '59 one piece, non-servicable air cleaner has an aluminum top piece (the piece with the louvers). The bottom piece that is CRIMPED to it (the surface that goes on top of the carburetor) is in fact magnetic and appears to be ferrous and definately NOT aluminum. Last summer (at the Bloomington meet) I saw a judge use a magnet on the lower surface of a '59 air cleaner and awarded the owner a deduct because the air cleaner was not ALL aluminum and therefore must be a repo.
The judging manual does not distinguish between the upper and lower halves of the air cleaner. It just says the air cleaner should be aluminum. I'm confused as to how to reconcile that with my original air cleaner which has been on the car since I purchased it in 1970. Help!
