    T10 Shifting Problems

My 62 shifted great for over thirty years. I've done a complete restoration of the car and in the process I had the transmission overhauled and switched from a Hurst shifter to a repro of the original shifter.
Today was the first day back on the road and I have a transmission problem. It grinds on the 3 to 4 shift, more severe as the shift is made at higher vehicle speeds, and it pops out of 4th on decel.
The rebuilder said to pull the transmission and he will disassemble it and check it out.
Before I do that I want to make sure I have wrung out everything in the car. I've rechecked the rigging of the linkage and it seems ok.......but I'm looking for suggestions.

seriously doubt your problem is shifter related. pull the t-10 and take the rebuilder up on his offer to fix it(probably a synchronizer) mike

      John,

You might want to check this out before you take the trans out of your Corvette. Crawl under the car and take the 3/4 rod off the lever. Now you can shift into 3 and 4 gear by using a wrench on the trans. Put your shifter in 4th gear and your trans in 4th gear by hand. You will feel the lever snap into 4th gear. You may have to have someone hold the shifter in gear. Don't pull back on the shifter handle but hold it firmly. Does the rod now line up with the hole in the lever. If it does you probably have a trans problem. If it does not line up adjust until it does. Try it on a road test and see if the problem goes away.

Hope this simple check gets rid of your problem.

      Regards,

      JR

JR; if the t-10 were JUST popping out of gear then shifter rod mis-alignment would be first area to investigate but fact that it GRINDS going from 3rd to 4th points finger of suspicion towards a synchro. Regards , mike

          Dearest Mike,

Yes, the synchro ring would point to the grinding but you can take a synchro ring out of a transmission and throw it away and it still won't pop out of gear.

If it is the trans, I would start looking at the input shaft teeth (4th gear is on the input shaft)and the slider.

Maybe you are refering to the synchro as the complete 3/4 gear synchro assembly which includes the slider, drum, dogs snap rings and two synchro rings.

          Regards,

          JR

i agree with j.ray you can throw the blocking ring away but poping out of gear is a worn slider or 4th gear only Steve
