I would like to take the buckle apart to clean up a rusty roller. Or can you remove the webbing and reinstall it? Has anyone taken the top off as I can see it was assembled in two pieces. I do not want to send it out for repair just a little direction in how it comes apartis needed. Lyle

Re: 71 Seat Belt Buckle
Cover over pinch roller is a snap-fit to the male buckle tongue. Pry gently along the rear lower edge (facing fabric) and the cover will 'pop' off.
Roller is cad plated and belt fabric over the years rubbing against the roller will wear the plating. Roller can be removed from the male buckle tongue, but you need to gently SPREAD the ears holding it in place, twist the roller and remove.
Also, check the inside of the roller cover. Original belts installed a thin strip of foam here to press against the fabric/roller to thwart 'rattle' noise. Once you're inside, you'll generally find the foam deteriorated to the point of being useless. This is a good time to cut a new strip of foam (like that sold on rolls in various widths at hardware stores for home door/window sealing with self-adhesive backing on one side of the foam).- Top
