    RADIO CAPACITOR

I have two radio capacitors that mount on the coil support for a mid year small block. One has a number on the bottom,1852715, and the other is 1960958. The 1852715 unit has a oval shaped base tab for attaching and the 1960958 unit has a rectangular shaped tab. I believe these are part numbers and wonder if anyone has a cross reference for them. The 1960958 has Delco Remey and 3MF and the 1852715 just has DR and 3MF on it.

    Re: RADIO CAPACITOR

The '958 cap was factory original for '63-67 ignition coils on cars WITHOUT optional TI ignition (no cap was used on TI equipped cars). If you take a closer look at the emboss, you'll see it reads .3 uF instead of 3 uf....

      Re: RADIO CAPACITOR

Jack - I have the 958 capacitor on my 66 which I have owned for 34+ years and believe it to be the original. The problem I am having is all the judges say it can't be right since it has a rectangular attaching tab versus versus the egg shaped/oval tab. The part number is stamped in the bottom and is .3mF as you stated and this matches the AIM. Do you know if they changed the configuration at some point or not or is this a service replacement that is on the car?

        Re: RADIO CAPACITOR

All originals I've seen had the oval shaped base on 'em. Could be there were some built at some point in time with a different configuration; the proof of the pudding lies in the P/N--it's a MATCH.

        Two ways to go here:

        (1) Photograph and document the capacitor's identifying stamps and show the judges the next time your car is judged. Per the NCRS Judging Reference Manual (the 'white' book), Section 2, Rule 26, 'Judging Controverersies':

".... When a legitimate judging dowt does exist to the judges, Team Leader and Judging Chairman, the benefit of the doubt shall go to the owner...."

But, be prepared to accept a 20% scoring loss for the originality points associated with the capacitor for violation of the Configuration axis of originality.

        (2) Go with the flow and replace the capacitor with one having the expected oval shaped mounting platform and set your 'original' aside for future discussion/contemplation....
