    64 Distrib shaft

I am in the process of rebuilding the tach drive distributor out of my 64 base coupe. I received a new distributor shaft but am concerned because the cam profile is differenct from the one I removed. 165W is stamped on the underside of the cam on the shaft I removed. Does anyone know if this has any significance? Does anyone out there happen to have a picture of what is known to be an original shaft for cam profile comparison?...

    thanks,

None of the replacement shafts carry the correct cam and thus none of them will reproduce the proper distributor curve unless you have the distributor recurved on a sun (or similar) distributor machine.

As Bill mentions, the auto cam which is brazed to the top of the distributor mainshaft is part of the system which provides the machanical advance. The other 2 variables in the system are the weights and springs. You can (and I recommend) transferring the auto cam from the old shaft to the new one. Then, if you use the same weights and springs (or, identical replacements) you will have the same centrifugal advance curve as original. Hi-Tech Innovations of Panaorama City, FL can transfer the auto-cam for you if you can't find anyone locally capable of doing it.

Anyone have some contact information for Hi-Tech Innovations of Panaorama City, FL that Joe mentions?

They are one county over from me here near Tampa. I called them - here is their info - 4625 Panorama Ave, Holiday FL, 34690. Their web-site is under construction.

              Joe,

Thanks for the info! I am questioning the originality of the shaft I removed from the car (64 base coupe) there is a 165W stamped into the bottom of the cam. Is this the correct shaft for a base 64? So I'm not sure if tranfering the cam would be worthwhile.

I had Long Island send me a profile of the two replacements (relaizing these are not GM replacements as someone mentioned) the profile of cam I removed from my car is much closer to the Hi-perf replacement...

Also was there a difference in shape between 250/300hp weights and their Hi-perf counterparts?

I don't know if "165W" is the correct auto cam for your application. You could contact Dave Fiedler at TI Specialties; he could likley tell you if it is, or not.

For 1964, the centrifugal advance springs and weights were the same for all Corvette engines.
