The engine rebuild book I'm using indicates installing the rear main seal halves even with the ends of the block and cap. The instructions, however say to install it with the parting line offset so the halves don't meet even with the block and cap. Which is best to prevent leaking?

Re: '66 BB REAR MAIN OIL SEAL
I did mine last year and the concences was to put it at a tiny angle, instead of putting it in at 6 and 3 it was installed alittle above 6 and a little below 3.
Also before you put your pan back in double check the surface area and try and correct any uneven areas where someone prior may have over tightened the bolts and pulled in/distorted the maiting surface on the pan. Also use a torque wrench to tighten your bolt if they are over tightened they squeeze the gasket out of place.I used the old indian gasket shelac to set my side gaskets on my pan,let them tac up then installed the pan.I was also advised by my fatherin law (sinced past) that I should put a tiny bead of gasket sealer on the bolts prior to installing them into the engine block. Also the rear area that you have to use sealer on, less is better you dont have to use half a tube of sealer on it.- Top
