If I remember right, the early had frosted around the outer edge and polished center. The later had frosted center and polished around the outer edge. Don H.

There's a nice discussion on this running change in your copy of the '63-64 NCRS Judging Guide as well as even more words & music in Noland Adams' book 'Complete Corvette Restoration, Vol 2'.

        Re: 1964 hub caps

        Jim,

1964 Corvettes used two different styles of wheelcovers. Cars up to approximately production number 7760 appear as polished stainless steel with the inner portion of the outer lip frosted. Cars produced after the 7760 production number have the frosted pattern reversed with only the inner portion of the outer lip and rectangular slots being polished.

        Hope this helps.

          James,

I'm thinking the shiny caps lasted longer than 7760. We bought 8763 brand new in 1964 and it absolutely, positively had the 1st design caps. I have lots of pic's.... somewhere.

The current 63/64 judging manual references the 7760 production number. My '64 #9258 has the frosted caps. If the judging manual is wrong then why doesn't someone correct it?

              James,

I think what they're saying in the judging manual is that 7760 is the latest one that has been documented so far with 1st design caps but that doesn't necessarily mean new info won't be added which would move the number up. I didn't know that there was info needed in this range or I would have submitted my 8763 car with the 1st design caps.

I've been looking at old pictures of the car but so far, every one shows it without any hubcaps at all. (was popular in the early 60's if ya couldn't afford mag's and I had enough trouble just making the $108.22 payment every month) I think I had the caps off the car the first week I had it. I do well remember that they were the 1st design because they hung in the garage and I looked at them every day for years.
