What finish should the oil cap be on a early '59 motor? Cadium, or argent? Should the sticker run longitudanly around the end of the cap? Is the filler tube a different finish?
Sounds like it's time to buy an NCRS Judging Guide....
"Oil Filler Tube
Engine oil filler tubes on base engine 230 HP models may appear in either argent silver with yellow-greenish hue or semi-gloss black with open, vented breather cap either in cadmium plating or black. All optional engines (those with aluminum intake manifolds) use argent silver filler tube with cadmium cap....
High-lift camshaft engines (270 & 290 horsepower) only use a closed, non-vented cadmium plated cap (without cap washing decal). Vented oil caps (230, 245, 250 horsepower) use a washing instruction decal (water activated lacquer, or paper) which is orange and black on 1958 and early-1959; black & gold on later-1959 through 1960)"
On geometry of mount for the washing instruction label, Noland Adam's book, 'Complete Corvette Restoration, Vol 1' has MANY pictures of engines wearing their factory original oil caps (e.g. Page 279) where you'll see the decal was installed on the side of the cap, just above the lower flange with the longer side of its rectangle following the circular contour of the cap.
Per the manual the oil filler cap on an early 62 should be cad plated AC-OIL cap. Is this vented or non vented and when does early stop ( not clear to me)? After early it should be chrome.
